It is a statutory authority within the portfolio of the federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, jointly funded by the Australian Government and the fishing industry. Objectives 1. To identify gradients in the density/size distribution of western rock lobster to enable selection of representative areas. 2. To assess the catchability of western rock lobster and its relationship with population abundance and size structure. 3. To identify the relationship between the deep-water habitat and the density/size distribution of western rock lobster to enable a preliminary evaluation of the impact of lobster biomass removal in the deep-water. Non Technical Summary Outcomes achieved to date This study has resulted in the collection of biological, population and habitat data that improves our understanding of the role of western rock lobster in the deepwater ecosystem. The relationship between western rock lobster size and abundance and habitat established in this study is important for the effective management of the fishery in an ecosystem based fisheries management (EBFM) framework. For fisheries managers this information has application in two main areas. Firstly, it enables the examination of the spatial distribution of lobster abundance and size by habitat type and in combination with fine resolution fishing effort data may allow the assessment of standing biomass and harvest rate. Secondly, it provides invaluable information for the design and implementation of marine protected areas as a tool for research and species conservation. For researchers this …

Modelling Deep Water Habitats to Develop a Spatially Explicit, Fine Scale Understanding of the Distribution of the Western Rock Lobster, Panulirus cygnus

BACKGROUND The western rock lobster, Panulirus cygnus, is endemic to Western Australia and supports substantial commercial and recreational fisheries. Due to and its wide distribution and the commercial and recreational importance of the species a key component of managing western rock lobster is understanding the ecological processes and interactions that may influence lobster abundance and di...

Seasonal and interannual variations of upper ocean heat balance off the west coast of Australia

[1] The Leeuwin Current, a warm, poleward flowing eastern boundary current, dominates the surface circulation off the west coast of Australia and has profound influence on regional marine ecosystem and fisheries recruitment. In this study, the seasonal and interannual variations of upper ocean heat balance in the Leeuwin Current region are analyzed by using an eddy-resolving numerical model sim...

Effect of Zinc Oxide-Eugenol Temporary Restorations on Bond Strength of Composite Resin

Introduction: Effect of zinc oxide-eugenol (ZO-E) on bond strength of composite is equivocal. The aim of the present study was to determine if ZO-E affects shear bond strength. Methods: For the purposes of the study, extracted human molar teeth were ground so thatcomposite rods could be bonded to dentine. In group 1, dentine was not exposed to ZO-E. In group 2,...

Predation Risk within Fishing Gear and Implications for South Australian Rock Lobster Fisheries

Depredation of southern rock lobster (Jasus edwardsii) within fishing gear by the Maori octopus (Pinnoctopus cordiformis) has economic and ecological impacts on valuable fisheries in South Australia. In addition, depredation rates can be highly variable resulting in uncertainties for the fishery. We examined how in-pot lobster predation was influenced by factors such as lobster size and sex, se...
